Going green... sort of

It seems like everyone is doing it. I hear so much about it that if I don't "go green" I must obviously be a socially irresponsible person. Why do I feel guilty for using dispoable diapers, one of the most convenient invnetions of 20th century? Or ashamed of having all the lights on in my house? Evil for still getting my bills via the mail, even though I pay them online?
I am great at rationalizing my actions. First, I live in an apartment without a washer and dryer. I looked into cloth diapers, but I can't afford the initial small fortune it takes to acquire an adequate supply. I tried using washcloths instead of baby wipes, but Eli got sick of "poopy butt rags" (that I washed in the sink and hung to dry before taking them to launder) decorating our apartment. Next, Washington is extremely depressing this time of year. The constant rain and overcast gray sky easily leads to seasonal affective disorder. To prevent this, almost all my lights are on during the day. And finally, my superfluous paper consumption? If I don't get the bill in the mail, I forget to pay it.
So now you know my atrocities, I have to render my actions I know. However, I have started to separate cans, plastics, and glass out of the garbage and recycle them instead. I walk to the store when the weather is nice rather than drive (although a rare occasion recently). I wish I could say I drove a hybrid, but instead choose a car that gets 39mpg. And that is about it. I'll eventually do better.

I agree it's really hard! I also need to have the bills in hand to remember to pay.

We were so thrilled when we found out that we have a separate can for recyclables up here, so half our trash gets recycled.

I think it's so funny how going green is all cool now. But I am HUGE in recycling & being more conscious of how we affect the world. It gets easier as it becomes a life style choice you make. IKEA has some great bins to help make it more organized & not such an eye sore. Just unplugging appliances/electronics that you don't use all the time like your toaster saves a lot of energy & money.
My favorite website for these issues is www.earth911.org
It is full of great tips and links to your local recycling center. We used it a lot when we were remodeling & we even made some $ off our old stuff too!
But way to even consider cloth diapers!

BTW- The movie "An Inconvenient truth" blah blah blah CRAP... personal opinion!

Yay for going green. I think small things totally add up. idealbite.com is a good site too. They have small tips that you can do that make a big difference. I have them emailed to me every day.

And yeah, I can't decide if I want to try for a VBAC. I had a c-section after 2.5 hours of pushing. Lincoln was trying to come out ear first...his head was cocked funny and he wasn't descending. And then he ended up being 10 lbs, 3 oz so my doc said that I better just plan on c-sections. But the recovery was terrible so I don't know if I can submit to another one just yet :)

I had no idea that keeping stuff plugged in when I'm not using it, like a toaster, wastes energy. I must be an idiot!

PS how are you doing up in all the rain?
