Gestational Diabetes: My worst fear

Did you know that when diagnosed with gestational diabetes (GDM) 50% of those women will go on to be type 2 diabetics later in life? Unfortunately it's true and even worse my 3 hour glucose tolerance test indicated I have a problem. This was my fear realized. As a nurse, I see countless people with horrible complications from this disease: renal disease, blindness, neuropathy in the feet and so much more. I think worst of all is the home glucose monitoring my provider wants me to do. I hate needles. I hate blood. I hate pain. Now how am I going to do this????
After a deep breath I gain some composure and realize--- diet and exercise the no fail, tried and true complementary therapy to just about every physical ailment. So I meet with a nutritionist next week and walk more after each meal. As for now my fingers are getting sore at the thought of having to poke those little lancets into my own flesh.

Janel! Yay you have a blog! You look so cute pregnant, when are you due?
Bummer on the diabetes, hopefully you will be one of the 50% who do not get it later. Sounds like you are doing all you can so don't stress it.
Way to go on getting your Masters! Very impressed.
Keep those pictures coming!!

PS- I just wanted to tell you I think of you everytime I say my daughters full name. It's Andrina Janel Gross. Janel after my Mom and Kevin's Mom (Jane and Michele) together = Janel. Anywhoo.. just thought I would share.
The End.

I always hate that appointment! I was lucky to have missed getting GD both times, though the 2nd time I was pretty close!
I was anemic with Olivia and that wasn't fun either, I'm always worried when I get a hematocrit or anything that I'm going to be low to this day.
That doesn't sound fun, especially since you know all those complications! I am lucky enough to know some, but still be completely ignorant about most things medically. It keeps me from worrying too much. Good luck!

Janel! That's too bad about the GD...hopefully you will be able to control it well with diet & exercise. (I know what you mean...if only people would do those two things A LOT of ailments would be alieviated. So simple.)

Good luck & keep us posted!!
